 Generalized Procrustes Analysis

Generalized Procrustes Analysis

MDSS6

Duration :Duration : 1.0 day(s)

:: Course Summary

This course covers Generalized Procrustes Analysis (GPA), a powerful multivariate technique developped in psychometrics and used extensively in sensory evaluation to:
  • Summarize large sets of 3-dimensional data (objects, characteristics and assessors)
  • Identify structure and trends in the data
  • Identify agreement between assessors and correlation in the data
  • Produce graphical displays of the results

    :: Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of the course, participants will have learned:
  • In what context Generalized Procrustes Analysis should be used
  • What exploratory analysis should be performed on the data (Box-plots, descriptive statistics)
  • How to manipulate the dataset into the required format
  • How to read and interpret numeric and graphical software output
  • How to interpret and report the results of the Procrustes analysis

    :: Target Audience

    This applied training session in statistics is intended for all scientific staff who collect large datasets and who wish to graphically summarizing them as well as assess agreement between assessors.

    :: Prerequisite

    Participants must have attended Principal Component Analysis and its Applications or have working knowledge of this multivariate technique.

    :: Notes and Other Information

    • Each participant will receive a copy of an XLStat, SAS or S-Plus program, developped by Creascience, to run Generalized Procrustes Analysis
    • If you are interested in:
      • acquiring or furthering your skills in multivariate data analysis methods
      • putting the theory of multivariate analysis to practice with a wide array of case studies
      • and doing so with your very own software of choice

    :: Course Content

    Generalized Procrustes Analysis (GPA) is a multivariate technique commonly used in sensory evaluation to analyze free-choice profiling data. Under this type of sensory profiling, each assessor or judge describes a product’s characteristics using his or her own list of sensory attributes.
    This multivariate method is also highly useful in studying the consensus among judges in classic sensory analysis and in assessing scale use, attribute interpretation, panel performance, monitoring, etc. Finally, GPA is also used in market research to assess the similarity between terms used by sensory experts to describe products.
    This training focuses on the comprehension of the results obtained after running a GPA to help participants gain autonomy in interpreting software output. Examples and case studies will be presented to ensure the concrete application of the concepts discussed.
    The principles of GPA will also be outlined so that participants understand the underlying hypotheses involved when performing the analysis.
